Categories: Wilsonisms (All About Will)
Will is an out-of-the-box costume kid. That means each year he tells me what he wants to be for Halloween and I have to tell him that no one is going to understand who he is supposed to be. So each year he goes dressed as something conventional and obvious and he spends the night heartbroken that he isn't what he asked to be.
This year I decided it's supposed to be about fun. He's supposed to get to pretend to be the person he's dressed as. Who cares if no one really gets what - or who - he is? So, this year I said "Ok" and dressed my child up as his favorite character. Doctor Who.
Will went as the 10th Doctor. You're probably not aware of who Doctor Who is. That's ok. Neither was anyone during our trick-or-treating adventure. However, since you're reading this on the internet I have the ability to guide you here http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ so you can learn about the 10th regeneration of a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. Last night people just said "You're a doctor? What kind?" And Will would roll his eyes and say "THE Doctor. I'm THE Doctor." People just smiled and passed over the candy and then said hello to Gigi who was dressed as a conventional cheerleader.
Some people assumed he was a stockbroker. Some thought he was a door-to-door salesman. I started to feel bad for him, but he never picked up on having won the award for Most Obscure Halloween Costume. He was in British Sci-Fi Trick-or-Treat heaven.
I have to say, this costume was pretty easy to put together. We had his Easter suit, Converse high tops, and we'd purchased a Sonic Screwdriver and Psychic Paper from a UK toy store online. (Everytime I say Sonic Screwdriver or Psychic Paper my Mom shakes her head and wonders why we can't just let the kid watch Spongebob.) We were missing a suit jacket and a wool coat, but the thing is that The Doctor fights bad guys in space and in London where it's not 85 degrees while you're walking around in October. So our Doctor Who dressed to avoid a heat stroke.
While a lot of kids want nothing more than be a Jedi, a ninja, a pirate, or a superhero for Halloween it's never been the case for Will. Here's a list of who he has requested for the past several years:
