The Luncheon

I was invited to a former co-worker's retirement luncheon.  I accepted the invitation without hesitation.  I was looking forward to seeing my co-workers again after a month of not having co-workers.

The night before the luncheon I realized how new I am at being a SAHM.  That's Stay-At-Home-Mom, which I have also recently learned.  I had accepted an invite to a luncheon, but I had forgotten that I have two kids and no childcare.

I ran to find the girl who lives down the street - she's a babysitter extraordinaire.  Lucky for me, she was available.  Problem 1 - down.

Problem 2 hit the next morning.  Since being "unemployed" my "work clothes" consist of various capri and cropped pants, a swimsuit cover up and a swimsuit.  And flip-flops.  I realized I could attend the luncheon looking that way, but everyone else was coming from work - where there is a strict dress code.  That meant I needed to actually iron something and take more than 5 minutes to get ready.

Problem 2 was solved, the babysitter arrived, and I headed out the door.  I even remembered to take my cell phone.  I never have my cell phone.

The luncheon was beautiful.  Everything was wonderful and I enjoyed seeing my friends again.

Until.

It never failed that while working I'd be in the middle of something important and one of the kids would get sick.  The phone calls always came while I was in the middle of something.  I never got phone calls on the days where nothing happened.  I don't know why I was surprised when the phone rang - but it did.  Gigi had vomited during naptime.

My friends understood.   They had seen this happen to me for years.  I excused myself and ran home, stopping by the bank to take out more money - bonus money - for the babysitter who had cleaned up Gigi and the vomit.  I did tell you she was a wonderful babysitter.  At least this time I was able to take a nap at the same time when I got Gigi back to bed and there wasn't any work to mess with.  It was nice.
